Barbados To Conduct First MICS Survey

All countries are preparing to fulfill their reporting obligations as the 2015 target of the Millennium Development Goals/Millennium Declaration (MDG/MD) approaches. Various initiatives are ongoing to collect data for monitoring human development as it relates to children and women in areas such as health, education, and child protection.

One key effort in the Caribbean is the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) – an international household survey developed and funded by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UNFPA and UNWOMEN, and implemented by Barbados Statistical Service (BSS) following approval by the Cabinet.

The survey, which has been conducted worldwide four times (1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010) will commence data collection in households in Barbados between May and June 2012.  Training sessions for Supervisors, Enumerators, Editors, and Measurers is scheduled to start mid April 2012.

Data collected through the MICS will contribute to   evidence-informed plans, policies and budgets that will lead to the fulfillment of the rights of children as detailed in the Convention of the rights of the Child, to which Barbados is a signatory. The MICS project will strengthen the statistical capacity of the BSS, and provide short-term employment to field staff.

Further information on MICS is available at www.childinfo.org or by contacting: Mr. Frederic Unterreiner, Chief of Monitoring & Evaluation, UNICEF; or

Mr. Trevor David, Deputy Director, Barbados Statistical Service.
